Note: pkg_install.tgz last changed on 10 October 1993 - please grab
an up-to-date copy since newer packages may require the latest
       functionality.

This directory contains pre-packaged software for use with FreeBSD.

Package names ending in *_bin.tgz are prebuilt binary packages, and generally
install into /usr/local or /usr/gnu by default. Package names ending
in *_src.tgz are full source releases, which will install in /usr/ports
by default. See the relevant pkg_install documentation for information
on how to change these defaults.

To use these packages, you'll need the pkg_install software suite
contained in the file `pkg_install.tar.gz', which you should also see
in this directory. It is a gzip'd tar file, and can be unpacked as follows:

To unpack (as root):

cd /
tar xvzf pkg_install.tar.gz

This will unpack the pkg_install suite into /usr/local/bin and
/usr/local/man. See the man page for pkg_add for information on
adding packages (add /usr/local/man to your MANPATH if you seem to be
having trouble finding the man pages). If you wish to use the special
"pkg" front end to pkg_install, which is written in tk, then you will also
need the tk_bin.tgz and tcl_bin.tgz packages. This is only necessary
if you want a graphical interface; command line operation requires no extra
software.

Otherwise, watch this area for ported software, as it will be trickling
into here as we get it done or people submit donations. All of the following
